The drama of cinema

Many a times we have seen that a movie – or the movie’s star – gets caught up in a controversy right before its release. And the people are fed every bit of detail about the controversy – usually related to the movie – which actually acts as an appetiser for the movie audience.

People then hog to the theaters with the legacy of the controversy in their minds and in the end of it all the movie makers stand to gain profits. But was that controversy only by coincidence? Or was it by design? Given the number of such “conincidences” the answer seems to be staring us in the face. But does that mean that our movies hold no merit on themselves? Do they need these gimmicks to survive?

People are always hungry for gossip and controversies. A star popularity is directly proportional to the number of controversies he/she has. Before the release of a big banner movie, a star created a scene at one airport on being checked at security claiming.

it was all because of his name and that he was being racially abused – which was the very theme of his upcoming flick and an obvious indirect way of promoting his movie. Given that he has such a fan following, one expects him to set examples by playing down big fusses like this and not be a cry baby for no matter.

Another star is constantly surrounded by controversies and he denies almost every against him. Due to his controversies he has this image of a fearless person – much similar to the character he portrays in his movies. And no surprise that he has constantly been giving super hits at the box office.

And controversies have become a claim to fame for others too! And given the media circus, it is not a difficult thing to execute! Truth be told, the media and the masses -  we love controversies. We cant just go and watch a movie unless we know the star or any other personal controversy he or she is associated with.

Bollywood is an area that cannot be ignored. Its contribution to India’s economy and its “Soft Power” as Shashi Tharoor calls it, is incomparable. Moreover, it creates thousands of jobs per movie thus doing its bit in covering areas like employment generation, poverty alleviation and tourism. So if a movie needs a little hype to be successful – and thus provide for a lot of people – will it be justified.

if a fake controversy helped it along? But what about the quality of the movies? Films like Rang De Basanti and Chak De India are a couple of examples that have been hit because of their quality. Why should they be in the same league as other movies that lacked quality but were buoyed by controversies?

It may be argued that controversies can just create hype for a certain film but in the end it’s the content of the film that bring in the audiences to the theaters and make it run. But fact cannot be ignore that they do fuel the cash.

Also, movies are not lone gainers. A lot of times it’s not the filmmakers but some Political Parties or Nationalists or some silly Litigators try to gain some publicity for themselves by using Bollywood as a Soft Target. Take for example Shiv Sena’s role during ‘Wake Up Sid’ , and ‘My Name is Khan’ , BJP during ‘Fanaa’ and host of others who just file a PIL against something or the other for the sake of publicity.

But it cannot be ignored, that’s for sure! There is no smoke without a fire. Love it or hate it; enjoy it or criticise it; controversies are a part of the stage today. And the way it is going, seems like they are here to stay.
